Not sure the answer is cut and dry like that TBH. I purchased a Super Slim 3 months back based on people saying it was the most reliable. Within a week I was getting a very glitchy display and the lid would be problematic. the display eventually (2 weeks later) became completely unusable (I blame the cheap way it was built, very flimsy backplate) and I took it back and swapped for a Slim instead.
Basically, if you were able to adapt a USB stick to the SATA connector, and the stick doesn't fall under the max bandwidth of the internal SATA connector, the USB stick would have identical benefits to the SSD. Honestly although I liked my PS3 slim better than my current super slim, due to the quieter drive and better quality casing. I recommend that you get the super slim especially if you're buying preowned if not get the slim version.

If you do choose to get the fat PS3 go over to r/ps3hacks for info on how to mod it for better cooling. Mainly the external power supply conversion. Ps3 + ps2 Get a ps3 slim or super slim, you could buy one with a small hard drive (there was a 12gb model) and upgrade the hard drive and then buy yourself a ps2.

That PS3 super slim isn't backwards compatible with PS2. The only PS3 variants to include true PS2 backwards compatibility with true PS2 hardware inside, was A FEW of the original piano black launch release consoles.
